Steve Rockfish isn’t thrilled to cover for his partner, Jawnie McGee, at the Women Investigators in Crime Conference. Estelle Cummings, the winner of the conference’s “Dinner with Jawnie McGee Contest” isn’t happy either. Much to Rockfish’s chagrin, a virtual Jawnie agrees to assist Estelle in laying fresh eyes on a cold case forgotten after almost 50 years.

In 1976, kids in the small town of Ewan played Army under a crisp Autumn sun. In the fields and forests, they killed and captured the German, Vietnamese and Soviet soldiers their older brothers, uncles and fathers had enlisted to fight against for real. After one such battle, eight-year-old Karen Lazar goes MIA and five years later her body turns up, fresh as the day she went missing.

Rockfish and Estelle battle years long gone and a list of witnesses, suspects & retired investigators who are either dead, uncooperative or in the throes of dementia in an effort to bring the identity of the murderer to light.
